Public Safety Pathways

Guidance for Students Interested in Firefighting, Law Enforcement, and Military Careers.

Students interested in public safety careers are encouraged to begin exploring opportunities early. Gaining exposure, building foundational skills, and participating in structured programs will help you make informed decisions about your future pathway. The steps below are designed to help you get started:

Build a Foundation

Interested in Fire, Police, EMT, or Military? This is the introductory CPR Certification course that is mandatory for any student interested in a career in public safety.

      Santa Rosa Junior College Dual Enrollment

       Class: Emergency Medical Responder 100

        • This course is strongly recommended for any student considering a public safety career. It introduces essential emergency response skills and provides a strong foundation for future training.
        • Students will:
          • Learn how to respond to medical emergencies
          • Develop hands-on, problem-solving skillsI
          • Earn CPR certification for healthcare providers

Gain Field Experience

Firefighting Pathway

     Option 1: Sonoma County Fire Explorer Program

      • The Fire Explorer Program provides students with direct exposure to the fire service through structured training and mentorship.
          • Participants will:
            • Attend weekly trainings at fire stations
            • Develop foundational fire service skills
          • Eligibility:
            • Ages 14–20 (must have completed 8th grade)
            • Minimum 2.5 GPA
            • Attendance at two initial drills prior to application
            • Successful completion of an interview

     Option 2: Sonoma County Fire Department Shadow Opportunity

      • Students may apply for a shadow day through the City of Santa Rosa and Sonoma County Fire. This experience allows you to observe firefighters in a real-world setting and reflect on your level of interest in the field. Police- Law Enforcement Pathway

     Option 1: Sonoma County Sheriff Explorer Program

      • This program offers students an in-depth introduction to law enforcement practices and responsibilities.
          • Participants receive training in:
            • Laws of arrest
            • Defensive tactics
            • Crime scene management
            • Report writing and communication systems
          • Students are expected to:
            •  Attend scheduled meetings
            • Participate in community events
            • Engage in ride-along experiences
          • Application Process:

            • This is a selective program. Thoughtful, well-written communication is important.

     Option 2: Santa Rosa Police Department Shadow Opportunity

      • Curious about what it is really like to work in law enforcement? A ride-along gives you a firsthand look at a police officer’s daily responsibilities and can help you decide if this is a path you want to pursue. Students need to be 16 years or older. Please fill out this application and pay close attention to the rules and regulations outlined.

    Option 3: Summer Sonoma County Sheriff Youth Community Academy

        • This program is selective and often draws from students already involved in Explorer programs. Students are encouraged to begin the application process early.
            • 5-day summer academy
            • Ages 14–18
            • Approximately 25 students accepted
            • Application opens April 20, 2026

Exploring Multiple Pathways

     Option 1: Rohnert Park Explorer Program

        • This program is recommended for students who are exploring interests across fire service, law enforcement, and military pathways.
              • Participants will:
                  • Gain exposure to multiple public safety fields
                  • Participate in ride-alongs and practical training
                  • Develop physical fitness and leadership skills
                  • Build teamwork and responsibility
              • Eligibility:
                • Ages 14–20

Important Notes

Students pursuing any public safety pathway are encouraged to:

    • Enroll in Emergency Medical Responder 100
    • Participate in at least one Explorer Program
    • Follow up professionally on all applications and communication
    • It is common for interests to evolve over time. Exploring different programs is an important part of identifying the right fit.
